Law Society of Upper Canada
The Law Society of Upper Canada is the self-governing regulatory body for Ontario lawyers. The primary responsibility or mandate of the Law Society is to regulate the legal profession in the public interest according to Ontario law and the Law Society's rules, regulations and guidelines.
The Law Society offers public services such as the Lawyer Referral Service (900) 565-4577which matches individuals with local lawyers with the proper expertise, a directory of certified specialists and the Lawyers Fund for Client Compensation which helps clients who have lost money because of a lawyer's dishonesty. A member directory, with lawyer's contact information, is also available on-line.


Department of Justice Canada
The aim of the Department of Justice is to help the federal government to develop policy and to make and reform laws as needed. It acts as the Government's "law firm".

The Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario
The Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario is the professional organization for Law Clerks incorporated in May 1968, for the purpose of providing an organized network for the promotion of unity, cooperation and mutual assistance among Law Clerks in Ontario. It is the mandate of ILCO to provide and promote general and legal education to its members for the purpose of increasing their knowledge, efficiency and professional ability. In addition, ILCO strives to advance and protect the status and interests of the profession. The Law Society of Upper Canada established the name "Law Clerk" and permitted use of this title to members of ILCO in 1968.
